LEBANON, Va. — This one went down to the final play — and one more.

Drew Walker downed the ball one snap (2.5 seconds) after the Tazewell Bulldogs thought time had expired to preserve a heart-stopping 29-27 come-from-behind victory.

Senior speedster Eric McDaniel scored four touchdowns and piled up 133 yards rushing on 18 carries to lead the Bulldogs (2-0) to the victory.

Lebanon (1-1) scored first and carried the fight to the Dogs on every series thereafter. Skyler picked up 105 yards and two scores but it was Pioneer quarterback Zach Jesse who led the way for the scrappy Lebanon team.

It was Jesse who raced 68 yards for the game’s first touchdown and finished with 133 yards on the ground, and who refused to let the Bulldogs slip away.

“Lebanon and Tazewell will both have a hard time getting out of bed tomorrow,” said an exhausted Bulldog coach Bobby Wyatt. “This was one of the hardest hitting games I have ever seen in my three years coaching here,” he added.

Indeed, it was a game filled with helmets being knocked off, dazed players being helped to the sidelines after hard tackles and spectacular plays all mixed in.

After Jesse’s touchdown, Tazewell piled up 15 consecutive points.

McDaniel bulled in from one yard out following a fumble recovery by T.J. Salyers back on the 15-yard line. McDaniel scored with 4:24 remaining in the opening stanza. T.J. Rasnick’s extra-point attempt sailed wide right and the Pioneers maintained a 7-6 advantage.

McDaniel broke four tackles and raced 70 yards for another touchdown on the next series. Tazewell missed on a two-point conversion to go ahead 12-7 and would not trail again.

Overall, Tazewell led 366 to 329 in total yards.

Rasnick kicked a 30-yard field goal to up the margin to 15-7 at halftime.

A 45-yard kickoff return by Musick was the big play as Drew Helbert punched in a 4-yard score for the Pioneers and Sutton Coleman booted the PAT as LHS closed within 15-14.

McDaniel’s third score came on a 5-yard run and Rasnick kicked the extra point.

Musick added a 1-yard touchdown and a 4-yard score for the Pioneers in the second half. The winning score was a 7-yard run by McDaniel with 5:56 to play; Rasnick added the PAT.

Jarrod Riddle recovered a fumble on the 30 yard line to open the drive and Walker tossed a key fourth down pass to Salyers for a Bulldog first down.

Tazewell led 29-20 and survived Musick’s final score by running out the clock over the final 2:10 when Lebanon had no time-outs remaining.

The Bulldogs are open this week and will host Carroll County Sept. 15.
