HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

MARION — The Graham G-Men captured the Bank of Marion High School Tournament at Holston Hills Thursday by an impressive 15 strokes over Marion.

The G-Men (322)  were led by Brad Yost’s 77. Morgan Brewster added a 78 while Ben Taylor carded an 82. Andrew Day finished with an 85.

Chilhowie’s Conner Hayden was medalist with a two-under 70 on the par-72 layout.

Marion (337) was second and Holston (339), Chilhowie (353) and Northwood (362) rounded out the top five.

Fort Chiswell (411) and John Battle (411) tied for sixth with Rural Retreat (412) and George Wythe (415) rounding out the field.

Graham returns to action on Aug. 24 at Tazewell Country Club.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

MORGANTOWN (AP) — Deniz Kilicli scored 20 points to lead West Virginia to a 98-57 win over Naval Air Station Sigonella in the second game of the Mountaineers’ overseas exhibition tour.

Kevin Jones added 16 points, Truck Bryant scored 15 and freshman Pat Forsythe had 13 points and 10 rebounds Thursday. Freshman Tommie McCune had eight points and nine rebounds.

The game was played on the island of Sicily.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

BLACKSBURG — The Virginia Tech football program will be holding the first of two open scrimmages this Saturday inside Lane Stadium.

Practice begins at 4 p.m., with the scrimmage starting at approximately 4:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to attend, but are allowed to sit in the west stands only. Also, videotaping is strictly prohibited.

The only other open scrimmage to the public is on Saturday, Aug. 20 and that practice will begin at 2 p.m.

Fans can enter through gates 4 and 5 only. No fans will be allowed on the field following the scrimmage. Concession stands and the bookstore souvenir shop will be open on the West side only.

BLACKSBURG — The Virginia Tech Athletics Department is planning a special presentation for Frank Beamer as he enters his 25th year as the Hokies' head football coach.

The Athletics Department, in conjunction with the university, will honor Beamer Sept. 3, prior to the start of Tech's 2011 season-opening game against Appalachian State at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field.

University President Charles Steger and Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver are among those scheduled to be on hand for the presentation, which will be made on the field shortly before the game's 12:30 p.m., kickoff.

APPY LEAGUE BASEBALL

PRINCETON —Members of the Princeton Rays will be autographing free copies of the team's full-color 2011 team picture at Kroger of Princeton (located on Stafford Drive) on Saturday from 11 a.m - 1 p.m.
