Former Bluefield College standout Omar Reed scored team-high 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help push the NBDL’s Austin Toros past the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 106-105 on Saturday night. Reed, a fourth round pick in the 2011 D-League Draft by the Toros connected on 10-13 shots from the field, including 2-5 from the free throw line. Reed has played an average of 24 minutes in the Toros’ last two games while several members of the team are attending NBA training camps. Reed, a Tazewell product, was the AAC Player of the Year as a senior at Bluefield College in 2010. 

 The Bluefield Beavers will open its 2011-12 boys basketball season on Tuesday against archrival Graham at Graham Middle School. Tip-off is slated for 6:45 p.m. The JV contest is slated for 5:30 p.m. Graham just finished a 3-0 start to the campaign last week with wins over Shady Spring, Abingdon and Richlands. The Buster Large-coached Beavers will be led by the guard combo of Anthony Eades and Lykel Collier.
