Mount View senior center C. J. Lester signed Wednesday to play football and continue his education at the University of Charleston.
A four year starter on the Golden Knight offensive line, Lester garnered Class AA All-State Honorable Mention this past season.
Remarked Lester after the signing ceremony at Mount View, “I’m really excited to be playing UC football and getting back on the football field again.”
An outstanding student in the classroom, as well as star on the gridiron, Lester continued of where the Golden Eagles plan to use his talents, “They want me on the offensive line, but if they want me on the defensive line, I’ll play there.
“Wherever they want me to play, I will.”
C. J. has lived with his grandmother, Dovie Chaffins, in Hensley since he was 6 or 7.
Related Chaffins, “He’s excited and I am too. He’s always loved football and loved school too.”
Although uncertain of his plans after college, Lester will major in criminal justice at UC.
“We’re real proud of him,” spoke second year Golden Knight head coach Todd McCoy.
“I think Charleston is a real good fit for him,” McCoy continued. “From the sounds of it, I think they’re real happy to get him.”
Looking toward Lester’s freshman season, McCoy said, “Charleston’s got a veteran line coming back, so he’ll get to learn from a bunch of good kids.”
Over his four years as a Golden Knight gridder, Lester played on the defensive line, in addition to being the Mount View long snapper on punts.
Remarked McCoy of C. J.’s senior season, “He began the season playing defensive tackle.
“The last two or three games, we moved him to defensive end and he surprised us with his speed there.”
McCoy concluded, with hopes for more Golden Knight athletes signing to play college sports from Mount View, “I hope this is the first of many.”
