PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigerettes hosted the Capital High Cougars at Princeton High School Thursday night. The Cougars got 39 points from Shawnice Garland to defeat the Tigerettes 71-56 and stake their claim as one of the better teams in West Virginia.

The Cougars raced out to a 30-14 lead at the end of the first quarter by playing solid fundamental basketball on offense and pressing Princeton into nine turnovers on defense. Shawnice Garland scored 16 of those points by making seven of her eight shots from the field and blocked two Tigerette shots.

"She's capable of doing that anytime she wants to," said Cougars coach Steve Freeman about Garland. "She's too unselfish at times. Tonight her shot was going in and she was taking her shots, but I thought it was within the context and the flow of the game."

The Cougars eventually built their lead to 46-24 at halftime. The Tigerettes did whittle down the lead to 12 in the second half, but the mountain was too big to climb and Garland made sure that her team would not lose their lead. "They're just so athletic," Princeton head coach Debbie Ball admitted about the Cougars. "I know that they play with the guys all the time, so their timing's even quicker than most girls. That's an exceptional basketball team as far as I'm concerned."

The Tigerettes now stand at 9-10 with a game against Hurricane on the horizon. The Tigerettes are still looking to come together in full even at this late juncture of the season.

"(We'll) just try to work on things that we need to do to make us gel a little bit better," Ball added. "We're not really changing for any game or a team. We've actually just tried to improve what we have."

The 15-4 Cougars face Greenbrier East next Wednesday in a key game heading into the postseason. Capital is confident and they are stating their goals for this season very clearly.

"'We want a championship this year, conference and state," Garland said. "I think we pretty much have it in the bag. I'm confident."
