Chase Illig, a Bluefield native who played his high school baseball for Lou Peery at Tazewell High School, has been selected by the New York Yankees in the 29th round of the MLB draft.
Illig, a catcher, recently completed his redshirt sophomore season under Randy Mazey at West Virginia University.
He is the program-record seventh veteran of this year’s ultra-successful Mountaineers baseball squad to be picked up in the draft and the second WVU catcher to be selected.
This past season, Illig Played in 41 games with 23 starts, 12 as catcher and 11 as the designated hitter. He was named to the All-Big 12 Academic squad for two seasons at WVU. He is the son of Glenn and Paula Illig.
