Mazzulla...

Fairmont State men's head basketball coach Joe Mazzulla

FAIRMONT — It seems the head men’s basketball coach for Fairmont State, Joe Mazzulla, will be coaching at the next level.

On Sunday night, Adrian Wojnarowski, Senior NBA Insider for ESPN, announced via Twitter league sources informed the sports network that the Boston Celtics have hired Mazzulla as an assistant coach and the university confirmed. He has been the head coach of the Falcons since 2017.

Although Mazzulla spent three seasons in Fairmont as an assistant coach under Jerrod Calhoun helping the Falcons compile a 67-26 record that included three 20-win seasons and two NCAA appearances, he spent the year between that position and the head coaching job at Fairmont State serving an assistant coach of the Maine Red Claws, an NBA Developmental League affiliate of the Celtics.

In his two years at the helm of Falcons basketball, Mazzulla compiled a 43-17 overall record with a Mountain East Conference record of 35-9 while also helping to develop players like Jason Jolly, Caleb Davis, and Shammgod Wells. During the 2018-19 season, the Falcons earned a bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament and secured a spot in the Atlantic Region Tournament. FSU was eliminated after falling 63-60 to Mercyhurst in the first round.

Mazzulla started his coaching career by spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Glenville State, helping to develop two All-WVIAC honorees and a pair of all-freshman team honorees.

Before he began coaching, Mazzulla played four seasons at West Virginia University under head coaches John Beilein and Bob Huggins. The teams he was on made four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances that also included a Final Four berth in 2010. As a senior, Mazzulla started 16 games and averaged 7.7 points and 3.8 rebounds while also recording 139 assists that year alone.

Also at WVU, Mazulla won a Big East Tournament Championship and an NIT Championship while also being named to the Big East Academic All-Star Team in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
