Grundy's Cade Looney

GRUNDY, Va. — Apparently there's something to that age-old axiom of coaches that it's hard to beat a good team three times.

After a pair of double-digit losses to Twin Valley in the regular season, Honaker rolled in the second half to a 68-48 win over the Panthers in the Black Diamond District boys semifinals Wednesday at Riverview Elementary-Middle School.

Grundy ran past Hurley, 55-36, In the first game.

The Golden Wave will face the Tigers in Friday's finals, while the Panthers and the Rebels will square off that day for third place and a Region 1D playoff berth.

Grayson Honaker poured in 31 points as Honaker (13-10) got separation from a 28-28 halftime tie and built a 10-point lead in the third quarter and doubled it in the fourth, in large part by hitting 13 overall 3-pointers.

Honaker took over the game at key junctures. He scored 13 points in the third quarter alone.

"Twin Valley has an excellent team, but we didn't like being 0-and-2 against them in the regular season and we just wanted to give it all we got here in the district tournament," said the sophomore sharpshooter, who hit five 3-pointers and converted a number of layups, a couple by going coast-to-coast after one of his 11 rebounds.

"We gave all our heart and we hit some big shots. We played as a team and we hit the shots when we got open."

Added Honaker coach Brandon Miller, "when G's in rhythm, when he's getting to the rim with his pull-up working, he collapses defenses and that opens up my shooters."

Brett Boyd added 15 points on five treys and Luke Goodie added 12 points and solid defense in the post.

Isaac Hampton was the lone double-figure scorer for Twin Valley (11-12) with 13 points.

The Tigers held the Panthers' talented duo of Tylor Keen and Trevor McGlothlin to 11 points combined.

"We really didn't make any adjustments at halftime. What we were doing, we felt like was working," Miller said. "We played this team twice and got blown out both times.

"We tried to get up and down the court with them in the first two games and we just didn't have the athletes to do that, so we slowed the pace down tonight and we played a little defense on their two best players, McGlothlin and Keen, and we stayed in their face everywhere they went and it seemed to really frustrate them."

Goodie owned the low blocks for the Tigers, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

"I can't say enough about Luke Goodie, 12 points, 12 rebounds, eight blocks and I don't even know how many deflections he had that prevented open shots," Miller pointed out. "Luke Goodie's the player of the game in my mind.

"I've been telling that kid all year he has the potential to be great at this game and he showed some of that potential tonight."
