CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. — The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal hit and run crash in Tazewell County involving a bicycle.

At approximately 6:12 a.m. Thursday, Virginia State Police troopers were called to the scene of a fatal hit and run crash near Claypool Hill in Tazewell County, according to Susan Rowland, a public relations coordinator for the Virginia State Police.

Rowland said a bicyclist was traveling northbound on Route 19 near Route 609 when he was struck from behind. She said the striking vehicle fled the scene without stopping. The adult male cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

David Earl Christensen, 54, of Burley, Idaho was killed as the result of being struck by a motor vehicle which immediately fled the scene, Tazewell County Commonwealth Attorney Mike Dennis said.

Dennis said Christensen was cycling through the area on his way to Charlottesville, Va. to join his wife who was waiting on his arrival. Dennis said the man was traveling northbound on Route 19 approximately two miles south from the Virginia State Police Headquarters in the Wardell section of Tazewell County, Virginia.

"Law enforcement is asking for assistance from anyone who may have information regarding this incident," Dennis said. "A preliminary investigation has determined the suspect's vehicle is a Ford F-250 or larger truck, manufactured between 2011 and 2016. This vehicle should exhibit noticeable damage to the front, passenger side of the vehicle and possible damage to other areas of the vehicle."
