Scene of fatal shooting ...

Detective J.D. Ellison of the Mercer County Sheriff's Department said the shooting was on Appaloosa Street near Bluefield.

BLUEFIELD – An investigation is continuing into the death of a Mercer County man who died early Thursday morning after being shot during an argument.

Sheriff Don Meadows said his office was paged out to the shooting at 1:15 a.m. Thursday. Meadows stated it was a dispute between neighbors, and it was not the first call his department has answered there.

Detective J.D. Ellison of the Mercer County Sheriff's Department said the shooting was on Appaloosa Street near Bluefield.

"This incident was the result of an altercation between two males," Ellison said in a statement the department released Thursday afternoon. "During this altercation one 27-year-old male was shot by the second male, 30, and died as a result of his injuries."

The body was sent to the medical examiner's office in South Charleston.

"This is an active investigation that requires more followup at this time," Ellison said. "The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time out of respect for the family."

No arrests have been made in the shooting, Meadows said earlier.

"We're trying to sort it out at this time," he stated.
