New school site

This site near Bluefield High School is said to be the future site of a new elementary school that will consolidate Whitethorn Elementary School and Memorial Primary.

BLUEFIELD — Public hearings have been set for the closure of both Whitethorn and Memorial elementary schools in Bluefield as bids are now being accepted for building a new school to replace them.

The new $10 million school will be constructed on 9.5 acres of land next to Bluefield High School.

Grants from the West Virginia School Building Authority for the new school were approved in December 2017.

Teresa Russell, data and information specialist for Mercer County Schools, said the new pre-K through second grade school is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2020 and will accommodate students from both schools.

The SBA also approved a $7.8 million grant in October 2017 to build the Mountain View Elementary School, a pre-K through fifth grade which is now under construction on 23 acres along Blue Prince Road.

Projected to be open for the 2019-20 school year, the school will replace the aging Ceres Elementary School and Cumberland Heights Elementary. The new school will also house some students from Glenwood and Brushfork schools.

Russell said the current facilities plan also calls for the building of a new school to replace Brushfork, Bluewell and Montcalm elementary schools; however, no funding is available at this time for that project.

The public hearing on closing Memorial is scheduled for Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. at Memorial Elementary School and the hearing on closing Whitethorn is set for Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at Whitethorn Elementary School.

Anyone wanting to review the reasons for the closures and consolidation of students in a new school can visit the superintendent’s office or at the individual schools.

Written comments may also be submitted to the superintendent’s office, 1403 Honaker Avenue, Princeton, for review by the board of education no later than Feb. 26.

Sealed bids for the construction of the new school must be submitted to the Seminar Center, Mercer County Technical Education Center, 1397 Stafford Dr., Princeton by Feb. 22.

A pre-bid conference is set for Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Seminar Center.

Bidders can contact ZMM Inc., architects and engineers on the project, at 304-342-0159 for information on downloading bidding documents.
