BLUEFIELD — A raccoon has tested positive for rabies in the Lerona community, health officials said Tuesday.

The case in Lerona is the fourth positive rabies sample from Mercer County this year, according to Doris Irwin, a public health nurse for the Mercer County Health Department.

A pet was exposed to the rabies virus, and the animal’s owner is undergoing treatments as a safety precaution.
