BLUEFIELD — The four recipients of the 2009 William A. Myers Communitarian Award were announced Friday.

Craig Hammond, host of the Radio Active morning show on WHIS-1440 AM and WTZE-1470 AM, said the recipients of this year’s award are Art Riley, head of the Downtown Merchant’s Association in Bluefield, the United Way of the Virginias, the Craft Memorial Library in Bluefield and the employees of Sam’s Club No. 6569 in Bluefield, Va.

“I think this is the first time we’ve had four recipients,” Hammond said of the annual award named in memory of the late Myers, a long-time community servant who dedicated his life to making the region a better place to live.

Myers, the father of Bluefield Daily Telegraph Managing Editor Samantha Perry, was a true communitarian who put community above everyone else, Hammond said.
