CLAYPOOL, Va. — Kmart at the Claypool Hill Mall in Tazewell County will be closing in April, company officials confirmed Tuesday.
The store located at 1051 Claypool Hill Road in Cedar Bluff will close to the public in mid-April, according to Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings.
Riefs said the store has 50 employees. Riefs said associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the associates are part time/hourly, he said.
The confirmation of the store closure comes only one week after the announcement of the looming closure of Walmart in neighboring McDowell County. More than 140 jobs will be lost as a result of the Walmart closure in Kimball.
Mike Hymes, chairman of the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors, said officials received no advance notice of the Kmart closure.
“As as far as I know our county recived no advanced notice of the K-mart closing at Claypool Hill and we were not contacted requesting any assistance to keep the store open and avoid losing the jobs,” Hymes said. “It is unfortunate that our area is being negatively impacted by the closing.”
