PRINCETON — A candlelight vigil starts 8 p.m. today at the Mercer County Courthouse for Joseph “JoJo” Garbosky, who died Aug. 10 at a Charleston hospital.

Organized by Mercer County Child Protect, the community has been invited to help honor Garbosky. If there is inclement weather, the vigil will be moved indoors, Child Protect officials said Monday.

Plans for the vigil include having a place where the public can leave mementoes, according to Shiloh Woodard, executive director of Child Protect of Mercer County. Songs and prayers will be part of today’s vigil.

Garbosky was brought Aug. 8 to a Bluefield hospital and was transferred to a Charleston hospital due to his injuries. He died Aug. 10 after being on life support.

John Colan Powers, 46, of Green Valley has been charged with second-degree murder, death by a parent, guardian or custodian, and child abuse resulting in serious injury, according to a criminal complaint filed by Sgt. M.D. Clemons of the West Virginia State Police Crimes Against Children Task Force. The boy’s mother, Candice Jones, 31, is charged with death by a parent, guardian or custodian and child neglect resulting in death.
