BLUEFIELD — An investigation was underway Friday after a man was shot in the leg at a Bluefield residence off the corner of Fairfield Avenue and Longview Avenue.

Mercer County 911 received the initial call about 11:30 a.m., according to Patrolman R.V. Johnson Jr. of the Bluefield Police Department. At first, the call indicated that a home invasion had taken place.

“Once we got there, we made entry into the house,” Johnson said. “We found one gunshot victim, a male in his 20s.”

The man, whose named was not released Friday, had been shot once in the upper leg with a .45-caliber handgun, Johnson stated, adding that the injury did not appear to be life threatening.

A Bluefield Rescue Squad ambulance transported the man to Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Johnson said he was admitted to the hospital.

The gunshot victim did not live at the home, but he had been invited inside, Johnson said. Its resident, another male individual, was the shooting suspect. Charges had not been filed, and the suspect was cooperating. His name was not released Friday.

“It’s still an ongoing investigation,” Johnson said when asked about the motive behind the shooting.

The Bluefield Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene.
