BLUEFIELD – City officials confirmed Friday that an investigation was underway into the death of a Bluefield City Jail inmate who died at a local hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell.
City Manager Dane Rideout confirmed Friday evening that an inmate had been taken from the jail to Bluefield Regional Medical Center where he died.
"There is an ongoing investigation," Rideout stated.
City Attorney Colin Cline said the inmate was found when a check was made of his cell.
"We had a gentleman who was found unresponsive during his morning bed check on the third of July (Wednesday) and he was transported by ambulance to Bluefield Regional Medical Center where he passed away from unknown causes," Cline said. "He died later that morning."
The name of the inmate, who was an adult male, was not released Friday. Cline did not know why the inmate was being held at the city jail.
The Bluefield Police Department is investigating, Cline stated.
