SALEM, Va. — Doris J. Thompson, age 85, of Salem, Va., formerly of Gary, W.Va., died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Snyder Nursing Home in Salem. Born January 17, 1924, in London, England, she was the daughter, of the late Arthur and Alice Dennis Masters.
She was a resident of Gary since 1946, happily residing the past year and a half at Snyder Nursing Home in Salem, Va. She was a War Bride, arriving in the United States on the Queen Mary. She was a member of Gary United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir for many years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilliary Post 38 in Gary. She served as President of the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by, in addition to her parents, her husband, Allen G. Thompson Jr.; one sister, Beatrice Wright; and one brother, Arthur H. Masters.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Gary L. (Allana) Haase of Bloomington, Ill., Mrs. Gene (Peggy) Shortt of Roanoke, Va., Ms. Kay Burnett of Bridgeport, W.Va., Mrs. Ray (Tammy) Kinzer of Concord, N.C.; one son, Jeffery A. Thompson of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 11 a.m. from the Gary United Methodist Church in Gary, W.Va. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va.
Friends may call Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Fanning Funeral Home in Welch, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be family.
