Dennis Christian

GILLIAM — Dennis Ray “Scrap” Christian, age 55, of Gilliam, W.Va., passed away Tuesday night (Dec. 30, 2008) at his residence after a brief illness. Born September 7, 1953 in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of the late Herbert Christian and Geneva Mitchem Christian. He was a 1971 graduate of Northfork High School, he was the owner and operator of Scrap’s Transport Inc., he was affiliated with the Protestant faith, and he was a resident of McDowell County most of his life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a dear friend to all who knew him.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Eugene Christian; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Shupe.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 34 years, Doreen Shupe Christian of the home; two daughters, Stephanie Church and #1 son-in-law, Tim Rowe of Gilliam, W.Va., Denise Church of Huntington, W.Va.; two brothers, Kenneth Christian and wife Joan of Forest Hill, Md., Michael Christian and wife Janet of China Grove, N.C.; five sisters, Juanita Powell and husband Tommy of Fayetteville, N.C., Lois Ayres and husband Bob of Hanover, Pa., Della Walker of Edgewood, Md., Margaret Brown and husband Lonnie of Beaver, W.Va., Katie Lafferty and husband the Rev. Roger Lafferty of Beaver, W.Va.; his father-in-law, Gene Shupe of McDowell, W.Va.; two sisters-in-law, Rebecca Christian and husband Doug of McDowell, W.Va., Belinda Shupe of McDowell, W.Va., and Kristen Shupe of McDowell, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Bernie Shupe of Northfork, W.Va.; three grandchildren, who were the love of his life, Brandon “Bro” Powell of Elkins, W.Va., “His Jellies,” Alyssa Church of Gilliam, W.Va. and Skylar Church of Huntington, W.Va.; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday (January 3, 2009) at 1:00 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, W.Va. with the Rev. Roger Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, W.Va. Friends called Friday evening at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Emmanuel Watkins, Jesse East, Robert Moore, Charlie Burks, Newt St. John, and Clyde Graham. Honorary pallbearers will be Northfork Mayor Nick Mason and Danny Brown.
