BECKLEY — On Tuesday, our beloved Carl Rhudy of Ewart Avenue passed away at the Veterans Area Medical Center following a long illness. He was in his 78th year.

Born Walter Carl Rhudy on March 31, 1930, at Tazewell, Va, he was the seventh of nine of children born to the late Ellis H. and Bessie Skeens Rhudy. His infant sister, Mamie Louise and brothers, J.B. and Cecil also preceded him in death.

Carl spent his childhood at Tazewell, where he graduated from Tazewell High School. A veteran of the US Army, he served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. A resident of Beckley since 1956, Carl was meat cutter for ACME Supermarket. He retired as manager of the meat department with 43 and 1/2 years of service.

Carl was a tireless worker for First United Methodist Church on South Heber Street, where he was chairman of the board for 13 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Men. In the past, he had been scout leader for Boy Scout Troop I 11. Carl was a member of American Legion Post 32. When his family reflects on Carl, they recall a man that was loving, caring, understanding.

Carl is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Esther Gibson Rhudy; he is the devoted father of Carla Rhudy Wilson and her husband Niel of Denver, Colo.; Robert L. Rhudy of Alburtis, Pa.; and Vaughn Rhudy and his wife Cindy Scott Rhudy of Ghent; the doting grandfather of Sgt. Robert Carl Rhudy and his wife Adela, Christopher Robert and Matthew Brandon Rhudy, Jed and Jessica Wilson, Jonathan Scott, Joshua Vaughn and Rebecca Jane Rhudy; great-grandfather of Forrest Wilson and Daniel Rhudy; the dear brother of Eunice Jones of Bluefield, Va.; Mildred Renfro of Norton, Va.; Nonye LaRue and her husband Ralph of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Annis Conn of Tazewell; and Paul Rhudy and his wife Betty of Newark, Del; the fond brother-in-law of Macie Rasnick and her husband Don of Tazewell and Letha Anderson and her husband David of Bristol, Va.; a large extended family, many nieces and nephews, his church family and neighbors.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 217 S. Heber Street with the Rev. Dr. Bob Stoddard and the Rev. Homer Stewart officiating with the Rev. Dr. Gregory Hayes as soloist. A private burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park at Beckley.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Melton Mortuary at 1200 Harper Road and one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

Pallbearers will be nephews and family members.
