Water testing underway near W.Va. site of spill

CHARLESTON — A storm water collection trench overflowed at the site of a Charleston company that spilled chemicals into West Virginia’s largest water supply.

West Virginia American Water says testing Thursday night of treated and untreated water near the Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant detected no evidence of the chemical that turned water taps off to 300,000 people for days in January. More testing was being conducted.

The overflow occurred at the Freedom Industries site, which is amid bankruptcy proceedings.

The water testing was conducted in the Elk River near the treatment plant’s intake, as well as elsewhere.

The water company says it is “constantly monitoring the situation” and is taking precautionary steps. They include additional personnel to monitor untreated water.

Freedom is under multiple federal and state investigations.
