“The Pride of West Virginia” won’t take the field at halftime in Saturday’s football game in Maryland, but director Jay Drury says it will be playing in the stands.
Media outlets say fans have been furious since learning the marching band would not be allowed to perform.
Kickoff in Baltimore is set for 3:30 p.m., and the game is airing on ESPNU.
Drury says band members love performing and are disappointed. Not all of them will be able to travel.
But the University of Maryland says it informed WVU last June that it its standard practice is to have only Maryland musicians perform on the field during home games.
On its Facebook page, the WVU band says it appreciates fan support and wishes the “Mighty Sound of Maryland” well.
