Snowy owl visit to W.Va. stirs birders

CHARLESTON — A native of the arctic is paying a visit to West Virginia.

A snowy owl sighting in northern Preston County in late November attracted birders eager to get a look at the big white bird.

Rich Bailey is an ornithologist with the state Division of Natural Resources. He told The Charleston Gazette snowy owns rarely visit West Virginia.

Bailey said they stray from their usual habitat during what is called “irruptions.”

He said snowy owls are being seen across northern United States because they are in the middle of one.
