Miley left standing in W.Va. House speaker’s race

CHARLESTON — Judiciary Chairman Tim Miley is the Democrats’ expected nominee for speaker in West Virginia’s House of Delegates.

The Harrison County lawyer emerged as the prevailing candidate after fellow contender and Finance Chairman Harry Keith White endorsed him Friday.

Miley is 47 and was first elected to the House in 2004. He became Judiciary chairman under Speaker Rick Thompson, who is leaving the Legislature to head the Department of Veterans’ Assistance.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is expected to convene the House on Tuesday to elect a new speaker.

Miley must now unite the House’s 54 Democrats in advance of a closed-door meeting to nominate a speaker candidate. But Republicans have one of their largest House minorities in decades. GOP delegates hope enough Democrats will defect to hand them the speakership.
