Amtrak passengers in W.Va. up 2 percent

CHARLESTON — More than 56,000 Amtrak passengers began or ended their trips in West Virginia in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

That’s up about 2 percent from the previous federal budget year.

The Charleston Daily Mail reports that Huntington was the busiest Amtrak station in West Virginia with 11,186 passengers. Charleston’s station was second with 10,038 passengers.

Martinsburg was third with 9,331 passengers, followed by Hinton with 8,897 and Harpers Ferry with 6,287.

The number of passengers using the station at Thurmond more than doubled during the period, from 264 to 563.

Nationwide, the nation’s passenger rail service said Monday that it carried a record 31.6 million passengers during the period.
