NEW MILTON —
State, federal and independent investigators are on the scene of a natural gas well explosion that burned five workers.
Work on the Hinterer well near New Milton has been halted while the state Department of Environmental Protection, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and investigators hired by Antero Resources investigate what happened.
Vice President Al Schopp (SHOPE) of Colorado-based Antero says all five victims were taken to a burn center near Pittsburgh after the Sunday morning accident.
He couldn’t immediately comment on their conditions Monday.
Schopp says the crew was nearing completion of the well and was putting a narrow production tube inside the casing.
Methane gas ignited. Schopp says the source of the ignition is unknown.
Several tanks containing brine water ruptured.
The DEP didn’t immediately comment.
