Explosion at W.Va. gas well site injures at least 5

NEW MILTON —  At least five people have been injured in an explosion at an Antero Resources natural gas drilling site in Doddridge County.

The Doddridge County EMS says the explosion occurred about 4 a.m. Sunday at a well site in New Milton.

Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Kathy Cosco says inspectors believe a pump on which the employees were working may have ignited vapors in the immediate area, causing an explosion and two tanks to rupture. She says other tanks on the site were damaged, too.

Cosco said five people were taken to the emergency room, but she did not know their conditions.

EMS officials said earlier that a total of eight workers had been injured.

Cosco says the DEP will return to the site Monday to further investigate the cause.
