W.Va. DOH struggles to find workers, low pay cited

Associated Press

BRIDGEPORT — Hiring and keeping employees is a struggle for the West Virginia Division of Highways.

DOH spokeswoman Carrie Bly says the agency has about 600 vacancies statewide.

Bly tells The Exponent Telegram  that low pay is a factor. But the DOH doesn’t have funding to pay employees more.

Bridgeport-based District 4 has the most vacancies, 67. Bly says the other nine districts have been 40 and 50 vacancies.

District 4 manager Greg Phillips says many of his district’s vacancies are truck driving positions. He says it’s difficult for the DOH to compete with the oil and gas industry for drivers with commercial licenses.
