Prosecutor to step down in W.Va. shooting case

CHARLESTON — Kanawha County’s prosecutor is stepping down from the case of a neighbor accused of attempted murder and firing random shots during a standoff.

Mark Plants’ office says he agreed with a motion filed by the attorney of defendant Mark Bramble to have Plants recuse himself because he lives in the same South Hills neighborhood where police say 48 shots were fired during an Aug. 12 standoff.

The motion by Bramble’s attorney, Trent Redman, said Plants could be considered “possibly an alleged victim.”

Plants’ office says the recusal will eliminate a likely issue in the event of an appeal.

Police have said Bramble appeared to be firing at random in the neighborhood before shooting himself.

Bramble had resigned as a lawyer in the state Attorney General’s Office days before the shooting.
