Dog rescue from W.Va. river could lead to charges

FAIRMONT — The superintendent of Valley Falls State Park is considering whether to file charges against a couple whose dog was swept over the falls and two fishermen who violated a swimming ban when they jumped in to rescue it.

Ron Fawcett says he’s pulled eight bodies from the Tygart Valley River in 18 years as superintendent of the Fairmont park.

The body count nearly grew over the weekend when the couple waded in the fast-moving river with two dogs and a child.

One dog was swept over the falls.

Two fishermen tried to rescue it, and Fawcett says one man was nearly swept over the second set of falls.

Fawcett is now consulting with the Marion County prosecutor.

He said Monday he’d rather anger people than have to remove their bodies.
