RICHMOND, Va. —
The mystery behind who won a $99 million Mega Millions drawing in May is over.
Lewis Howard of Cumberland received a check from Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto in Richmond on Thursday.
The winning ticket sold in Farmville had remained unclaimed for more than five months. It matched all six numbers in the May 17 drawing.
The Virginia Lottery says Howard will split the $198 million jackpot with the holder of another winning ticket bought in New Jersey. He chose a one-time cash option of about $73 million before taxes.
The ticket bought in New Jersey also has been claimed.
Howard says he waited to claim his prize so that he could make good decisions.
He’s the seventh Mega Millions jackpot winner in Virginia.
