Four Va. localities to create broadband authority

Associated Press

SALEM, Va. —  Four localities are joining forces to promote access to high-speed Internet service in the Roanoke Valley.

Roanoke and Botetourt counties and the cities of Roanoke and Salem plan to create the Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority.

The Roanoke Times reports that Salem City Council unanimously approved a resolution Monday night to make the city a member of the authority.

Similar resolutions have been approved by Roanoke and Roanoke County. Botetourt County is expected to approve a resolution soon.

Salem City Manager Kevin Boggess and Mayor Randy Foley say the goal is to enhance competition in the marketplace.

Boggess says the authority’s role will be to evaluate services and infrastructure in the region to ensure that it’s prepared for the latest technology.
