Gillespie raises $2.2 million in Va. Senate bid

RICHMOND, Va. — Republican Ed Gillespie has raised $2.2 million in his bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Mark Warner.

The Gillespie campaign announced its first fundraising totals Tuesday.

The former Republican National Committee chairman’s campaign says 60 percent of its donors are Virginians and 15 donors had previously given to Warner.  A spokesman says the campaign launched in January but did not hold a fundraiser until Feb. 19.

Campaign manager Chris Leavitt says the totals reflect enthusiasm for Gillespie’s pro-jobs message.

Gillespie is considered the front runner to win the Republican nomination. The GOP will formally pick a Senate candidate at a party convention on June 7 in Roanoke.

Tony DeTora, Shak Hill and Chuck Moss are also vying for the GOP nomination.
