FREDERICKSBURG, Va. —
A pilot escaped injury after his small plane ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing in Fredericksburg.
Shannon Airport manager Robert Stanley says the plane landed Monday morning in a field next to a store parking lot about a quarter mile from the airport.
Stanley says the pilot had tried to land at two other airports because the plane was running low on fuel, but fog prevented those landings and he headed toward Shannon Airport. But the plane ran out of fuel, forcing the pilot to land in the field.
The plane was damaged.
The Free Lance-Star reports police identified the pilot as 33-year-old Jerome Matthew Orlando of Broadway.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler says the plane was heading from Tampa, Fla., to Charlottesville.
