Va man bitten by ants after car lands on anthill

ROANOKE, Va. — A Vinton man is recovering from ant bites and other injuries after his car went out of control and landed on an anthill.

The accident occurred Sunday on northbound Interstate 81 near mile marker 141 in Roanoke County.

Virginia State Police Trooper Gary Chafin tells The Roanoke Times ) that 59-year-old Lewis Wyrick was unable to stop his car as he approached a traffic backup resulting from an earlier wreck.

Wyrick lost control and the car rolled into a ditch. The car landed upside down on the anthill. Chafin says the car was covered in ants.

In addition to the ant bites, Wyrick suffered lacerations and head and back injuries. Chafin says he was taken to a hospital.

Wyrick was charged with reckless driving.
