Confederate flag stirs patriotic Va. retort

RICHMOND, Va. —  A group’s plan to hoist a Confederate flag up a 50-foot pole along Interstate 95 has sparked a patriotic response from opponents in the former capital of the Confederacy: the flying of the American flag.

The Virginia Flaggers is scheduled to fly the 10-by-15-foot flag on private property Saturday south of Richmond at a location that has yet to be disclosed. A spokeswoman said details would be released later Friday.

Since the group announced its plans in June to raise the flag in Chesterfield County, opponents said they have gathered nearly 24,000 signatures on an online petition and have urged residents to fly the American flag.

The heritage group has said the flag is a gesture intended to honor the area’s Confederate heritage and is not intended to offend.
