NC woman who led prostitution ring sentenced

RICHMOND, Va. — A North Carolina woman has been sentenced to three years and two months in federal prison for running an interstate prostitution ring.

Michelle Matney was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Richmond. She will be on probation for three years after her release.

The Greensboro, N.C., resident pleaded guilty to conspiracy to persuade others to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution. According to court papers, Matney admitted recruiting and supervising an unspecified number of prostitutes from 2010 through 2012. Prosecutors say she recruited sex workers, put them to work in other states and received a portion of their earnings.

Henrico County police in suburban Richmond arrested several women who implicated Matney.
