Va. Tech board announces prez search committee

BLACKSBURG, Va. —  Virginia Tech’s governing board has appointed a search committee to find a replacement for retiring president Charles Steger.

Steger announced earlier this month he would retire when his replacement was found. Steger has been president since 2000 and led the school during the 2007 mass shootings in which 32 students and faculty were killed.

Virginia Tech Board of Visitors Rector Mike Quillen announced the formation of the 22-member committee on Friday. It includes members of the board, faculty and students.

The committee will hold its first meeting on June 2. It will meet in Blacksburg and elsewhere in the state and solicit input through its website www.presidentialsearch.vt.edu .

The 30,000-student university has not given a timetable for naming a new president. Quillen said the group would work “quickly but expeditiously.”
