Police say suicide may be factor in Va plane crash

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — Virginia State Police say suicide could be a factor in a small plane crash that killed the pilot.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says 22-year-old Edwin G. Hassel of Fredericksburg was the only person on the plane when it crashed Monday evening in Spotsylvania County.

Geller said Tuesday in a news release that the single-engine Cessna 172M was flying near Shannon Airport when it descended rapidly and crashed. The plane then caught fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.
