Official: 2 dead, 4 hospitalized due to illness in Southwest Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. —  A state health official says two people are dead and four have been hospitalized due to an “isolated illness” in southwest Virginia.

Robert Parker, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Health, said Friday afternoon that the state, local physicians and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating the cause of the illness.

He said the illness is confined to one family and a close friend of that family. Parker said there is no indication of “person-to-person” transmission of the illness and there is no evidence of a public health risk.

Parker said the site of the possible exposure to the illness is on private property and has been secured pending the investigation.
