Va. coalfields Republicans denounce Obama's climate change plan

Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. — Three Republicans representing Virginia’s coal-producing region are calling President Barrack Obama’s proposals to deal with climate change a “war on coal.”

They outlined their opposition Tuesday before Obama was to fully explain his environmental measures. The three focused on Obama’s expected move to enact the first federal regulations on carbon dioxide emitted by existing coal-fired power plants.

U.S. Rep. H. Morgan Griffith said that will drive up the cost of electricity, hitting the poor and the working poor the hardest. Rep. Terry Kilgore said the limits on coal-fired plants will put the U.S. at a manufacturing disadvantage with the rest of the world.

Like his fellow two Republicans, Sen. Charles W. “Bill” Carrico said Democratic candidate for governor Terry McAuliffe would work “hand-in-hand” with the Obama administration.
