Va. state senator victim of attempted email scam

NORFOLK, Va. — A Virginia state senator says her email account has been hacked by someone who says she’s stranded in France and needs money to get home.

Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, tells the Virginian Pilot this is at least the fourth time in the past year that her contacts have received bogus emails attributed to her.

In the latest incident, the culprit posing as Lucas says in an email titled “Horrible Trip” that she’s stuck in Rouen, France, after losing her wallet and her cellphone. It says her passport is being held by a hotel seeking payment for lodging.

“I am sorry if i am inconveniencing you, but i have only very few people to run to now. I would be indeed very grateful if i can get a loan of $2,000 from you,” the message reads. “This would enable me sort out the hotel bills and get my sorry self back home.”

Lucas actually is at home recuperating from an ailing back.

“I’m not anywhere but up here in this bed with my feet propped up,” she told the Norfolk newspaper.

She said she has assigned the technology specialist at her company to look into the matter, contacted her Internet service provider and informed law enforcement. So far, none of those steps has remedied the problem.
