Mineral man’s 2007 rape conviction vacated

— — A Mineral man’s 2007 rape conviction has been vacated.

The University of Virginia School of Law says a judge vacated Edgar Coker’s conviction on Monday. Fairfax County Circuit Judge Jane Marum Roush’s order says Coker no longer has to register as a sex offender.

Coker’s legal team includes members of the university’s Innocence Project and Child Advocacy clinics.

Roush said in her order that Coker’s original defense was “not reasonably competent.”

Coker was accused at the age of 15 of raping a 14-year-old girl in Stafford County. The U.Va. clinics say Coker pleaded guilty to rape and breaking and entering after the prosecutor said he would try Coker as an adult and seek a lengthy prison sentence.

Coker’s accuser recanted and acknowledged the encounter was consensual after he pleaded guilty.
