Va. Senate panel OKs undoing abortion restrictions

RICHMOND, Va. —  Democrats in the Virginia Senate are trying to undo some of the anti-abortion laws previously passed into law when Republicans controlled the General Assembly.

A Senate panel approved two abortion rights bills Thursday at the Capitol.

One bill would repeal the requirement that women seeking an abortion first get an ultrasound. The other would allow insurance plans sold in Virginia to individuals or small groups provide coverage for abortions.

Supporters of the measures said the recent Democratic victories in statewide contests show that the public does not support the abortion restrictions passed by Republicans in recent years.

Democrats won control of the state Senate last month. Republicans still enjoy a large majority in the House, which is unlikely to support the bills passed by the Senate panel.
