Va. river declared safe a week after manure spill

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. — Health officials have declared a section of the Pigg River safe in Franklin County a week after 30,000 gallons of cow manure wastewater spilled.

The state Department of Health advised residents last week to avoid recreational use of a section of the river, including swimming, boating or fishing.

The Roanoke Times reports those advisories have been lifted because the river’s water quality has returned to normal.

The wastewater spilled April 3 from a holding lagoon west of Rocky Mount. The spill entered a tributary of the Pigg River.
