USS Vella Gulf to deploy

NORFOLK — A guided-missile cruiser is preparing to deploy from Norfolk.

The USS Vella Gulf is scheduled to leave its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk on Friday.

The Navy says the ship will support maritime security operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility, which includes the Mediterranean Sea.

About 350 sailors serve aboard the Vella Gulf.
