GOP leaders call for Va treasurer’s resignation after Facebook comments

RICHMOND, Va. —  House Republicans leaders want the state Republican Party’s treasurer to resign over an offensive comment he made during a Facebook chat about a female lawmaker.

Treasurer Bob FitzSimmonds used an off color description of female genital when discussing Fairfax Republican Del. Barbara Comstock’s run for Congress. The Virginian-Pilot first reported the comment.

FitzSimmonds deleted the post containing the offensive word and apologized. He told the Pilot he did not mean to use the word deliberately and was not trying to disparage Comstock.

But in a statement from House Speaker William J. Howell’s office, top House Republicans said FitzSimmonds should resign immediately.

Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins also called on FitzSimmonds to resign.

FitzSimmonds did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
