Suspect dies following chase, gunfire in Va.

PEARISBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police are investigating a police-involved shooting in which a suspect died in Pearisburg.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the incident began around 4:35 p.m. Saturday in Narrows when police confronted the suspect as part of an investigation.

Geller said Sunday in a news release that shots were fired during the confrontation and the man fled. He then stopped his vehicle and shots were fired again. The man fled a second time and stopped his vehicle in Pearisburg. Shots were again fired.

Geller says the suspect is dead but she didn’t say whether he was shot.

A passenger in the vehicle and police officers weren’t injured.

No other details were immediately available. The suspect’s body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
