BIG STONE GAP, Va. —
A landmark in Big Stone Gap is closing after being in business for more than 60 years.
Mutual Drug Cafeteria is scheduled to close Friday. It has been merged with CVS, which has a store up the street.
Owner and pharmacist Ed Carlton tells the Bristol Herald Courier that closing the business is the hardest decision he’s ever had to make.
Carlton says it’s difficult for a small business to survive because of the costs of insurance, gasoline and health care-related expenses.
He and some of the store’s 20 workers will move to the CVS store.
