More than four dozen local tourism projects in Virginia are receiving state grants.
Gov. Bob McDonnell says that grants totaling more than $1 million are being awarded to 54 projects. The matching grants are part of the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s Marketing Leverage Grant program. The grants will be used to create advertisements, websites, social media and other marketing initiatives.
Officials say the grants will impact at least 282 other statewide tourism entities.
The grant program aims to leverage marketing dollars through local partnerships. To apply for a grant, at least three cities, chambers of commerce, attractions or other entities must partner financially.
The Virginia Tourism Corporation awards about $1.7 million annually to more than 80 communities across Virginia. Those funds are usually matched 3-to-1 by partner dollars.
